Understanding Vietnamese Farmers’ Perception toward Forest Importance and Perceived Willingness-to-Participate in REDD+ Program: A Case Study in Nghe An Province

Climate change continues to pose a constant threat nature and human beings, thus demands adaptability flexibility in forestry domestic land use management. In this context, the Reducing Emission from Deforestation Forest Degradation (REDD+) project was introduced harness forests curb greenhouse gas emissions an effort combat climate change. As of 2020, REDD+ implemented 65 countries across world, including Vietnam. While missions afforestation forest protection cannot be accomplished without aid local residents, low participation stakeholders, particularly poor farmers, is obstacle mitigation projects. To contribute improving with useful Vietnam reference, study uses random sample approach coupled face-to-face interview method survey 215 households Chau Thai, one 206 communes Nghe An province, learn about (1) residents’ perception towards importance forests, (2) how as source livelihood, (3) potential for household engagement REDD+. The research findings show that important role well acknowledged, majority forestland allocated plantation seeds are carefully selected satisfy market demand. addition, recorded make major contributions income roughly four-fifths revealed their willingness get involved monthly subsidy 500–2000 kVND (22.3–89.2 USD). provides valuable information forest-based rural livelihood policy options facilitate among farmers. This, turn, helps devise more appropriate policies sustainable mountainous development nationwide beyond.
